COMMENTARY

IS it possible to urge the people of Guyana to be logical in arriving at a conclusion on the dire consequences of decisions enforced upon the whole population by the combined political parties in Opposition, to the ruling party entrusted with the responsibility of managing development of the country?

This is an important question with burning implications that must affect the future development of our nation. In this regard cognisance must be taken of the remarks offered by the Minister of Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh in a statement issued from his office recently on the announcement by Muri Brazil of its decision to pull out from the exploratory venture they entered with the government and which prompted the Minister to say “is the latest example of the harm being inflicted on Guyana’s development prospects by APNU and the AFC’s attack against investors in Guyana”.
Indeed one has only to recall the recent upheaval created by the combined political parties when they joined together and demonstrated clear anti-development disposition towards the Amaila Falls Hydro Project, the CJIA Expansion Project, the Specialty Hospital and the Marriott Hotel Project, the Anti-Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism Bill, when the rest of the world was looking to see Guyana’s reaction to these far reaching obligations.
It was most damaging to our ability in fighting crime, the message sent to the International bodies to say the least, was most appalling and which has left Guyana in limbo.
Apart from the damaging image of our country, the effects of the anti-national stance embraced by the two parties have directly deprived several hundred thousand Guyanese the opportunity of attractive employment and thereby assisting in raising the living standards of the people.
The Opposition is obviously not seized with the vision of transforming this country into a real modern state that can be compared to the world’s fully developed countries. This government is determined to press on with the projects that will greatly propel this country forward. Take for instance, the modernisation and improvement of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport; it is essential to contributing towards the needs of a truly attractive tourist industry.
We have to prepare for success and have to avoid congestion and other irritants that could develop when visitors and tourists begin to come to our very interesting country; this is foresight sadly missing amongst the leadership of the political Opposition.
Guyanese must understand what is happening in the country because of the one seat majority in Parliament and must take a vow to never let it happen again come new elections.
