Benjamin Sports Store 40-mile road race pedals off in Berbice on Sunday

THE 3rd Annual Benjamin Sports Store open cycle road race will pedal off in Berbice this Sunday and will mark the first cycling event for 2014 in Guyana.

The race is organised by the Flying Ace Cycling Club of New Amsterdam in association with former club member and proprietor of Benjamin Sports Store, Wilbert Benjamin, who is an active cyclist in Canada.
The race will start from Fyrish Public Road on the Corentyne to the Number 1 Road then back to the starting point for a ‘flying start’.. They will proceed to Number 43 Village and back to the starting point for the finish; the juniors will pedal to Number 36 Village and return.
Prizes will be presented to the first 6 finishers, first 3 Under-45 veterans, first 3 juniors, first 3 females; while special prizes will be presented to the first 4 finishers from a newly formed club in Corriverton.
While accepting the sponsorship cheque from Gary Benjamin, brother of Wilbert Benjamin, coach of the Flying Ace Cycling Club, Randolph Roberts expressed gratitude for the continued support of the sponsor.
“On behalf of the Flying Ace Cycling Club of Berbice, we would like to thank Mr Benjamin for promoting cycling and giving back to the community,” he said.
Meanwhile, on February 23, cyclists from across Guyana are expected to participate in the mega open road race on the Corentyne, which will mark the 80th Birth Anniversary of Sanko Benjamin, father of Wilbert Benjamin.
The winner of that event will cart off $80 000.
