– disarmed another rank in Alberttown before his arrest

THE Guyana Chronicle has been reliably informed that Delon Abrams, the 24-year-old prisoner who disarmed a police constable and later shot dead a detective corporal was a former member of the Guyana Defence Force but is now a construction worker.According to reports, the prisoner who was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital from the Turkeyen Police Station continues to be in police custody and is being held in the lockups at Diamond Police Station under tight security.
According to a police source, the young man while being questioned informed detectives of the Criminal Investigation Department that it was not his intention to shoot the police officer.
He said that after he sprinted from the police at the hospital and made his way into Alberttown, he hid under a stairway and although two van loads of heavily armed police searched the area, they failed to spot him. He said that subsequently the police detective corporal and the constable came through the alleyway and found him hiding under the stairs.
According to the escapee, he was spotted by the two policemen and the constable’s words to the corporal was “shoot this man yeh” as the constable advanced to him.
Adams said that he was able to disarm the police constable under the stairs and now had two police service weapons in his possession. He said that he wrestled the gun from the police after hearing “shoot this man yeh.”
The police source also informed this newspaper that the prisoner said that he had thoughts of handing the weapons over to the detective corporal but wondered if he would have been shot. However, the very policeman rushed towards him and attempted to take the weapon away.
A scuffle then ensued and the policeman was hot, Adams told the investigators.
The police had reported that the prisoner resided in South Ruimveldt but according to him, he lives at Crane, West Coast of Demerara and would usually frequent South Ruimveldt where he does construction work.
Meanwhile, police have determined that the man was also fingered in other incidents of break and enter as the case on Monday when he was captured by residents and received a thrashing before being handed over to the police.
Abrams is expected to repeat everything he said to the police yesterday during a video interview which is scheduled today and which will be conducted by Criminal Investigation Department ranks.
On Monday night the Accident and Emergency Unit of the Georgetown Public Hospital was plunged into a state of chaos and panic after the prisoner wrestled Police Constable 21981 Joel Greene to the ground and disarmed him before fleeing the health facility and later shooting dead Detective Corporal 14998 Seburn Elias who attempted to arrest him.
Commissioner of Police Leroy Brumell on Monday who visited the Georgetown Public Hospital has ordered an immediate investigation into the matter which he said seems to indicate some amount of negligence on the part of the police.
