Twin calves born to Agricola farmer through Gov’t Artificial Insemination Programme

NALEENIE Narine, an Agricola, East Bank Demerara farmer yesterday morning welcomed two additional bulls into her flock. The bulls which weighed 26.5 and 24.6 kilograms respectively were a part of Government’s Artificial Insemination (AI) programme.According to a report from the Government Information Agency (GINA), the semen was imported from one of the top ten ranked bulls in the world.
Agriculture Minister Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, yesterday, paid a visit to Narine’s home where the animals were inspected thoroughly by Veterinarians and AI Technicians from the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA).
“I feel really happy right now. While this is not the first time we welcomed animals through the Government Artificial Insemination programme, it is the first time my husband and I welcome twins and we are really excited,” Mrs Narine said.
Naleenie and her husband have been rearing cattle for the past 22 years, and run a very successful small cattle farm.
Genetic improvement is an important strategy being used to increase meat and dairy production. The GLDA for 2013 alone welcomed six sets of twins which were successfully born through its AI programme.
To improve the country’s breeding stock, the Ministry of Agriculture introduced the AI programme which has since been proving successful.
