KLEON Benjamin of Lot 41 Station Street, Kitty Georgetown was yesterday remanded to prison until January 14 after he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and pleaded not guilty to unlawful possession of ammunition without being the holder of a valid firearm licence.
The 29-year-old miner allegedly had in his possession two live rounds of ammunition on Monday, December 23, at around 11:30 hrs, when he went to the Georgetown Prison to take clothing and footwear to committed prisoner Anthony Watson.
Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, told the court that, on the day in question, woman prison officer Jones conducted a search on the defendant prior to his meeting the prisoner he had gone to visit, and she found the ammunition in the left side Nike boots which he was carrying to Watson.
When told of the offence, Benjamin denied knowledge and claimed that he is not aware of how the ammunition reached inside the footwear, since he was working in the interior about three to four months ago.
The prosecutor objected to bail being granted the defendant on basis of the seriousness and prevalence of the offence, and the penalty it attracts.
