GuySuCo, GAWU to negotiate API today

THE strike action in the sugar belt is over and representatives of the Guyana Sugar Corporation (GuySuCo), the Guyana Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU) and others stakeholders will meet today to negotiate the payment of the Annual Production Incentive (API) to workers in the sector. This is according to Agriculture Minister, Dr. Leslie Ramsammy, who told the Guyana Chronicle that the agreement to meet was made on Tuesday, the first day of the country-wide strike.
He acknowledged that the strike was a clear demonstration that the workers believed they deserved to be paid the API this year.
The minister said, “Just as GuySuCo has asked for understanding considering the difficulties that affected production, we must also take into consideration that the production figures we are seeing is not their (the workers) fault.”
The API is paid to workers based on the sector’s yearly production.
