Defendant accused of church burglary denied bail

RICHARD Ramharran, a push cart vendor, of Lot 205 ‘B’ Field, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, was remanded to prison, when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, charged with breaking and entering a church. He pleaded not guilty to the offence, details of which said, between August 19 and October 23 in Georgetown, he broke and entered a Roman Catholic Church and stole a quantity of items, including a bell, three metal/wooden desks, one grill gate and one antique chest of drawers, all valued $895,000.
Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, said the building had been secured by a member who, on his return, found that the storage bond was broken into and the mentioned articles missing.
The Prosecutor said a report was made to the police and an investigation revealed that the defendant was seen leaving the bond from the western side.
The prosecutor successfully objected to bail for Ramharran, citing the prevalence and seriousness of the offence and the case was put forward to December 16.
