Continental Group of Companies to sponsor ‘Sunburst’ Linden Schools Under-17 championships

..tournament bounces off today

All systems are in place for the staging of the inaugural Sunburst Linden Secondary Schools Under-17 basketball championships to be staged at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court in Linden from today. The Linden Amateur Basketball Association (LABA) acquired the requisite sponsorship which covers the trophies, replicas and medals at stake for the top three finishers and individual awards.
President of LABA Haslyn Graham along with Secretary Joseph Chapman and Organising Secretary Ashton Angel (Jr,) secured the sponsorship after meeting Corporate Secretary Percival Boyce (Jr.) at his Continental Group of Companies office in Georgetown, recently.
Boyce said that the company through its Sunburst Orange Juice Brand came on board to promote the game at the school level where this Under 17 tournament will help promote the game in Linden.
Boyce noted that it was two years ago an attempt was made but after not being successful the association made another approach for sponsorship and they felt it appropriate to assist in having basketball played at the school level.
Graham said he was pleased that the Continental Group of Companies were able to buy into the idea of the association that the game has to be played at the various levels in the schools.
In a release Saturday, Chapman said the tournament’s opening ceremony is set for today at the MSC Hard Court where at 15.00hrs there will be a march past of the different schools participating. These schools are Mackenzie High, Wisburg Secondary, Harmony Secondary, New Silvercity Secondary, Linden Foundation Secondary and Christianburg Wismar Secondary Schools.
This will be followed by the opening game of the championship where Wismar Christianburg Secondary will take on Wisburg Secondary at 16.00hrs.
Tomorrow there will be two more matches involving the other four schools as the round robin format continues throughout the rest of the week in this ten day championship, which will conclude on Friday December 13 at the MSC Hard Court.
