Accused hit and run driver remanded

MAGISTRATE Sunil Scarce, on Wednesday, remanded 49-year-old Delney Gonsalves of Dartmouth Village, Essequibo Coast to prison. That is because he was refused bail on a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
The driver who appeared at Anna Regina Court, also on Essequibo Coast, was also charged with failing to report an accident, fleeing from the scene and not rendering assistance.
Gonsalves was granted pre-trial freedom with $40,000 surety on each of the last three.
It was alleged that he was involved in a hit and run incident the night of November 6 on Riverstown Public Road, which resulted in the death of 71-year-old Pandit Narine Singh but fled the scene and only surrendered to police some two weeks later.
Gonsalves will have to make his next court appearance on December 7.
