Digicel Inter-schools table tennis : Mae’s A teams cop Under – 13 , Under – 15 titles

Following title wins by the Mae’s A teams in the Under – 13 and Under – 15 categories, St Stanislaus College and Queen’s College, yesterday, closed off the night matches, at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, as they fought it out for the Under – 18 title in the Digicel Inter-Schools Table Tennis Tournament.Playing into the evening, Kevon Corben finally overcame Jamal Skeete to hand the St Stanislaus College team their last win, as competition in the team’s segment of the event came to a close. Corben and Skeete’s match was the final of five matches that Saints and QC played as they battled it out for the title.
Corben made easy work of Skeete as he claimed the match 11-6, 11-6, 11-9, but it was the preceding match between Elisha Johnson and Shemar Britton that marked the day’s high point.
Britton found a tough competitor in Johnson, as the match went down to the wire in a brutal five set ending 3-2 in favour of Britton.
Nerves were high with either side barely able to construct more than a one piont lead throughout the entire first set which ended 12-10 for Britton.
Intensity continued throughout the second set, where Britton’s high shots continued to land off the table, while Johnson’s ball found the net too often, the set finally played out 15-13in favour of Johnson. Increased anxiety on Britton’s part handed the 11- 8 third set to Johnson, but he– recouped and levelled the scores by taking the next set 11-9. Determined for a win Britton played the final set to 13-11.
In earlier matches, Britton teaming up with Ryan Narine went down 12-10, 11-4, 10-12, 9-11, 6-11 to Johnson and Corben, in the doubles match, while Skeete lost to Johnson 4-11, 5-11, 4-11 and Britton won 11-8, 10-12, 9-11, 9-11 against Corben.
Third place for the Under -18 competition went to the Mae’s A team of Miguel Wong and Kyle Edghill, after the Bishop’s High A team forfeited due to injury.
The Under – 11 category was won by North Georgetown Primary, while second went to the Mae’s A team and Mae’s B finished third. The novice category was won by the Bishop’s High team after they won 3-2 against the Mae’s A team.
