NATIONAL players Chelsea Edghill and Jamal Duff led the Under -18 Bishops’ High “A” team to its first win as competition in the Digicel sponsored Mini-Cadet, Cadet and Junior Table-Tennis tournament began on Friday night last at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.Placed in Group B where they are expected to come up against Central High and Charlestown Secondary teams before moving into the next round, Edghill and Duff began with an assault against the former’s duo in Jurome Mitchell and Kevin Anderson, to claim their first win 3-0.
Things started off with Edghill taking Mitchell to a 3-0 end that included a hard fought second set, after she won the first 11-9.
Edghill tried to increase the pace on Mitchell in the second set, but to her own demise, almost handed the set to Mitchell, but managed to nick a 13-11 win, before closing out the third set 11-7, while Duff had an easier time against Anderson, winning 11-5, 11-5 and 11-5.
In the doubles matchup, Mitchell and Anderson traded points with Edghill and Duff until the set stood 9-9, but another two hard shots from Duff, handed the Bishop’s duo the win.
As the teams entered the second set, anxiety from Anderson and Mitchell coupled with over confidence from Edghill and Duff saw several mistakes coming both sides, but with a slight advantage to Central High, Edghill and Duff converted it into a win as they claimed the second set 7 – 11.
The victorious pair polished up their tactics and came back determined to finish off Mitchell and Anderson, which they did winning the next two sets 11-5 and 11-3.
In other matches in the Under -18 category, Queen’s College B defeated West Demerara Secondary 3-0 in Group B, St Joseph High defeated Ash Educational Academy A team 3-0 in Group C and Mae’s A defeated Ash Educational Academy B 3-0.
Down in the Under 11 category where the four teams are expected to play round robin finals, Mae’s A with Brandon Jaikaran and Niron Bissu defeated the Mae’s B team of Yeudistir Persaud and Heucent Dalip 3-0. Additionally, Tyriq Saunders and Neveah Clarkston collected a win for the North Georgetown Primary, who defeated Radha Krishna Primary’s Terrence Raush and Tromond Eversley 3-2.
Competition in the event continued yesterday with the Under 13 and Under 15 team events, as well as the novice category competition, while play will also continue today with the semi- finals and finals of the teams competition and the singles competition is expected to begin and conclude tomorrow.
