LAST TUESDAY afternoon at a simple ceremony, telecommunications service provider Digicel (Guyana) Incorporated handed over a cheque for $250 000 to the Guyana Cancer Society who dedicated and declared last month as ‘Cancer Awareness Month’. moot
The donation was the result of a gesture among the staff of Digicel, according to their Public Relations Officer Tandika Stephens, while cyclists who competed in the second Digicel Cancer Awareness Road Race last Sunday also made a tangible donation.
At the launching of the Digicel Cancer Awareness Road Race, a plea was made to the cyclists, who in response donated a total sum of $35 000 while Managing Director of Universal Auto Spares Shameer Baksh, who competes in the Veterans category, donated $50 000 on behalf of the cycling fraternity, making it a total of $85 000.
That sum was matched 100% by Digicel, whose staff also added $80 000 from their own in-house drive, hence the total sum which was handed over in a cheque to Accounts Manager of Guyana Cancer Society Nadia John, by Digicel’s head of Human Resources Narissa Alves.
“We at the Guyana Cancer Society, wish to thank Digicel for this gesture, which we feel will go a long way in helping the fight against cancer, the third leading cause of death in Guyana, while we also would like to thank the cyclists for their generosity as well,” said John.
In her brief remarks, Alves said Digicel is always committed to helping out in more ways than one, since it is the company’s corporate duty to do so and never found any reason not to, while she encouraged the Cancer Society to keep up the good work and thanked the cyclists for their generosity as well, on behalf of Digicel.
Team Coco’s Raynauth ‘Obeah Man’ Jeffrey copped the top position In the Seniors category while teammates Junior Niles and Michael Anthony won the Veterans and Juniors categories respectively and Linden Bauxite Bombers Cycle Club’s Hazina Bharrat won the Female category.
