THE Trinity Grid Holdings Pacesetters set the pace against Amelia’s Ward Jets to send a clear message of their intentions to win their third title in the Brushes Classic basketball tournament’s fourth staging on Sunday night, at the Mackenzie Sports Club Hard Court.
Playing in the presence of one of the members of the Brushes Basketball Foundation, James Brush, who is here from the United States, the Pacesetters seemed a bit jaded in the first quarter but still held sway 13-12 against their Linden opponents.
But the Jets were ahead when the halftime whistle came as they seemed in control leading 28-22.
But the pivotal third quarter saw the Georgetown side coasting to a 22-11 run as they outpaced the Jets to take a 44-39 cushion, before they sailed to an eventual 69-52 victory as the Jets were grounded in the last five minutes of the game.
Travis Burnett, their best player, raced to 21 points as the Pacesetters set the tone with some tight defensive plays which caused their opponents to turn the ball over as they failed to settle against the running Pacesetters in the final stage.
Naylon Loncke nailed shots from three-point territory towards the end of the game as the Jets simply could not cope with the strong showing by their rivals. Loncke finished with 13 points as Joslyn Crawford played well for 12 points.
Shane Webster had a good game for the Jets with 10 as did Kevin Joseph also scoring 10 while Allister Webster got nine and Amaniki Archibald seven from the losers.
Tonight, the Half Mile Bulls play Wismar Pistons at 19.30hrs and the second game at 20.30hrs is between Kings and Bankers Trust Falcons. At the Burnham Court in Georgetown the Colts and Ravens will clash at 18.30hrs.
