MINISTER of Health in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Abdulrahman Alowais met President Donald Ramotar at his office for brief talks yesterday, focusing attention on cooperation in various fields.

In the company of a small UAE delegation, the two officials pointed to opportunities for cooperation in the commercial sector. They recognised the importance of support at the top level to make these ideas a reality.

Joining the meeting were Director General in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Elisabeth Harper, and Head of the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA) Mahender Sharma.
Former President Dr Bharrat Jagdeo had visited the UAE during a frontier quest to the Middle East as he sought new allies to further promote the economic development of Guyana.
The UAE is located southeast of the Arabian Peninsula on the Persian Gulf, bordering Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Iran.

Its foreign relations are considered liberal and have encouraged diplomatic and commercial cooperation with other countries. The economy has been ranked favourably over the years.
Guyana and the UAE are both members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), an international organisation with permanent membership in the United Nations (UN) that advocates the interest of the Islamic world, and also peace and harmony.
Guyana was first granted observer status within the Organisation on September 27, 1995 and became a member on October 1, 1998. Guyana and Suriname are the only two CARICOM countries which are members of the OIC.
