SINCE the arrival of the three Wartsila generators which are expected to be installed at the Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara Sub-station, two of them have arrived on site so far.

Speaking to the media yesterday, Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) Chief Executive Officer Bharat Dindyal said the second Wartsila generator arrived at about 15:00hrs on Wednesday at Vreed-en-Hoop.
He stated that with the generators on site they can start the assembly of the plant since most of the critical foundations have been completed. Dindyal added that GPL is looking at the completion of the Vreed-en-Hoop Sub-station in April next year.
The cost of the project is G$6.4B in which the largest Wartsila generators will be installed and can produce about 9M units of electricity.
The movement of the three Wartsila generators weighing 130 tonnes each, which were acquired by GPL recently, began their journey on Sunday from Parika, East Bank Essequibo to Vreed-en-Hoop, West Coast Demerara.
The three 8.4 megawatts Wartsila generators arrived in the country and were offloaded at John Fernandes Wharf in Georgetown. They were subsequently taken to Archie’s Landing, Parika and began moving by a specialised heavy duty truck equipped with a flyover bridge to ensure safe passage to their destination.
The engines and components are valued US$26M and in addition to two storage tanks, the new power station will have its own wharf to accommodate a fuel vessel. BK International has been awarded a $242M contract for this.
When commissioned in April next year, the 26 megawatts engines are expected to boost GPL’s firm capacity to 106 megawatts.
