Two recently graduated lawyers — Mrs. Sandia Rebekah Harold-Ramnarine and Ms. Alanna Lall — were last Thursday admitted to the Guyana Bar by Justice Nareshwar Harnanan, following presentation of their petitions for admission by Senior Counsel Bernard De Santos. The two ladies were classmates at the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad, and graduated on October 5 with the Legal Education Certificates (LEC).
Harold-Ramnarine, a former student of St. Joseph High School, is also a Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) and an affiliate of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). She has worked with several organisations over the years, particularly the Guyana Electricity Corporation (GEC), the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), Cellsmart Inc., and more recently served as Billing Manager at the Guyana Power and Light (GPL).
Harold-Ramnarine was elected and served as the Treasurer for the Student Representative Council at the Hugh Wooding Law School, and also served on the Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship committee as the Evangelistic chairperson.
However, this new lawyer is not all about work and no play. She is currently the Director of WIST Dance Ministries International and a former member of the National School of Dance and the Nrityageet Dance group.
In addition, she spends much of her time in church working in the Sunday School Youth Departments.
Harold-Ramnarine is the wife of Vishwamint Ramnarine and the mother of Josiah Ramnarine. She says that all her achievements are only because of God and His awesome favour on her life, and the support she has continuously received from her family and friends.
She is extremely thankful to her husband, and is grateful to her son, whose love and understanding, she said, has formed the bedrock of support during the years of sacrifice.
Furthermore, she has committed to serving the legal profession with great integrity and diligence, and hopes to be an agent of positive change and growth where necessary.
Ms. Lall is a former student of St. Rose’s High School and the School of the Nations. She obtained a Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB) at the University of Guyana in 2011, prior to attending the Hugh Wooding Law School.
She has worked in the chambers of De Santos & Associates, and did in-service training in the chambers of the Director of Public Prosecutions and special clinic training at the Ministry of Energy in Trinidad & Tobago.
In a speech she delivered after being admitted to the Bar, Lall noted that it was “no stroll in the park”, since the path was “littered with twists and turns, pot-holes and bumps.” Nevertheless, she said, her achievements would not have been possible were it not for the untiring and unwavering support of her family and friends. She, too, is very thankful to God.
As she embarks into this new profession, Lall vowed to uphold the moral and ethical standards, to be a credit to the profession, to always abide by the preamble of Code of Ethics – honesty and integrity — and to listen and take kindly the counsel of fellow members to the best of her ability.
