Probe into home invasion murders of Sirmattie Ramnaress and Mootoos hit snag – but cases still active, says Crime Chief

FOLLOWING the murders of Sirmattie Ramnaress and the Mootoos, who were all killed in their homes, the police this week said that they have reached a snag as there are no new developments in both cases.

Crime Chief Seelall Persaud told this publication that there is simply nothing further to the homicides but they are still active cases being probed by the police and he is urging persons with information to assist.
In an earlier interview, Persaud had stated that they were reviewing the Ramnaress case to ascertain what else can be done to solidify the investigation.
So far, no arrests have been made but several persons of interest were questioned, including the woman’s reputed husband, Sergeant Collin Bailey, who is not considered a suspect.
A post-mortem examination had revealed that Ramnaress died from a ruptured spleen and brain haemorrhaging.
Sirmattie Ramnaress was found in her home at Lot 2430,  21st Street, Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara.  The 36-year-old was found  in the lower flat of her posh home  by an employee who turned up for work, as usual, the day the body was found.

The corpse bore stab wounds, her throat was slit and it appeared that the victim was also beaten on the head while her house was ransacked and the lower flat drenched with dieselene but not set afire.  A storage bond aback of the premises was gutted by a blaze that was doused by firefighters who were summoned to the scene.
Ramnaress, who lived in the house alone, had been seen sweeping her yard, on the morning of August 30, 2013, within the property that was well protected by alarm systems and a huge fence.
However, although there were surveillance cameras, footage from them is missing, as well as cash and jewels.
Neighbours did not recall hearing any distress calls from the businesswoman’s home nor did they see anyone entering or leaving the place.
Police reported that  about 10:00 hrs on August 31 the body of Ramnaress, was discovered in her home with injuries to her head and left hip.
The house had been ransacked and drenched with a flammable liquid and a storage bond at the rear of the building was destroyed by fire.

THE MOOTOOS
Police reported that at about 00:35 hrs on May 10, 2013, the charred remains of businessman Totaram Mootoo, called ‘Beer’, 54, and his wife Bhagmattie , called ‘Dolly’, 48, were found in the bedroom of the upper flat of their home at Area Q, Turkeyen, Greater Georgetown  which had been destroyed by a fire of yet unknown origin.
Although several persons were arrested following the horrific murders of  Mr and Mrs Mootoo, no one so far has been charged for the crime, five months on.
Post-mortem examinations were performed on the bodies of the couple whose charred remains were found in their bed following an explosion and fire at their home.
It revealed that Totaram Mootoo died as a result of smoke inhalation compounded with burnt trauma while his wife Bhagmattie succumbed to blunt trauma to the back compounded with burnt trauma.
