ALEXANDER Williams of 296 Ramsingh Street, ‘B’ Field Sophia, Georgetown, who allegedly snatched a gold chain valued $500,000 from the neck of Balram Shivraj on Friday, October 4, at the just concluded GuyExpo event in Sophia, was remanded to prison when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine Beharry on Monday.Williams pleaded not guilty to the offence, but according to the prosecution’s facts, the victim was in the company of his friends at GuyExpo when Williams went up to him, snatched his chain and escaped.
An alarm was raised and a plainclothes police officer unsuccessfully gave chase; but in another section of the building, the victim saw Williams with his chain around his neck and alerted the police. Williams was then arrested and charged with larceny.
Williams was silent as the prosecutor opposed granting him bail, citing the seriousness and prevalence of the type of offence.
The magistrate therefore remanded Williams until October 24.
