THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport’s master plan for the National Racquet Centre, located on Woolford Avenue, is being rolled out as the financial resources become available.
Currently the Ministry is looking to partner with educational institutions so as to offer courses at the centre.
“We are looking to sign off on some Memorandums of Understanding as to how we will be offering these courses … the master plan is there and as we get resources we are trying to complete the facility,” Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport Dr Frank Anthony stated during a recent interview.
The facility has lawn tennis and squash courts, and the latter will be extended to accommodate the construction of a stand from which people can view the games.
In October last year, a contract was awarded for the construction of a resource centre at the Racquet Centre, and that has been completed, and the Ministry is in the process of putting in the necessary equipment.
Additionally, the top flat will be made into a conferencing facility, while the bottom flat will house a library and a snackette. Such works are ongoing and are expected to be completed within the next month.
The Racquet Centre, which was commissioned in November 2011 by then President Bharrat Jagdeo, is the first of its kind in the Caribbean.
