Two suspects in custody but… Relatives want wife questioned about cop’s murder

RELATIVES of 29-year-old policeman Michael Cumberbatch, shot dead Monday night at his Lot 111 North Sophia, Georgetown home, called, yesterday, for his wife to be questioned on the ground that she, allegedly, knows the identity of the gunman.
Speaking to the media, brother of the deceased, Orlando Cumberbatch said Lillian Cumberbatch was the one who opened the door for the shooter who killed their loved one.

altHe added that the woman, hurriedly, emptied the house of some furniture, among other things and has since  disappeared.
Calls to her cell phone were unanswered and the call for her to be grilled was because, a few years ago, her then reputed husband was murdered in a similar manner and the surviving sibling is of the opinion that she knows more than she is actually telling.
Relatives also reported that the wife of the man who was attached to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) took possession of his motorcar, PPP 7979 and did not even tell them anything but just left.alt
They recalled that after the shooting the woman called names of some suspects they believe had a hand in the execution-style murder.
Relating his experience, Orlando Cumberbatch, who lives next door to his sibling, said he was in bed when he was aroused by screams coming from his brother’s house and went to investigate.

LARGE CROWD
There he saw a large crowd comprising neighbours and, inside the house, he saw his brother covered in blood and was told he had been shot.
The surviving Cumberbatch told the Guyana Chronicle that his sibling bought the property about five months ago and has since lived there with his wife and two year-old daughter.
He had been in the GPF for 13 years and was described as a peaceful and quiet person, who went about his business in a civil manner.
He said he understands that the cop was killed after he had ordered the gunman, who was enquiring after a man called ‘Quacy’, out of his yard.
altThe man once lived at that address and, even after being told that he no longer lives there, the enquirer refused to leave.
Sharmila Brown, a neighbour and relative, said she was awakened by the sounds of two gunshots and, by the time she ventured out, the man who fired them had escaped, leaving the policeman mortally wounded to be rushed to Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) by other neighbours.
She remarked that it all happened so quickly she  was unable to react but said that the man’s demise is sad,  as he was a good person who did not trouble anyone.
Acting Police Public Relations Officer, Senior Superintendent Whitney Bacchus reported, yesterday,  that two suspects are in custody pending further investigations into the Cumberbatch killing.
The deceased had suffered two gunshots, at close range, in the neck and chest, shortly after 21:00 hrs, following a brief exchange of words when he ordered a man off his property.
Cumberbatch had ventured out of his house to answer an enquiry from the shooter who was looking for another man.
When he succumbed at the GPH, loud wails erupted from a crowd that had gathered as word spread about his death.
Cumberbatch is a father of two daughters, a six- year-old from a previous relationship who resides with his mother at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara and the two- year-old out of the marriage to Lillian Cumberbatch.
