PYO condemns Opposition’s call for removal of Rohee as Home Affairs Minister – stands firmly behind the minister and his policies to ensure a safe and secure environment for all Guyanese

THE  Progressive Youth Organisation (PYO) has rejected the call from the leader of the Opposition for the removal of  Mr Clement Rohee as Home Affairs Minister.

altThe PYO, in a statement, said the call for Rohee’s removal is a pretext for the Opposition’s sinister plans to create political instability in Guyana.
“Their objective in demanding Minister Rohee’s removal is to set the stage for the destabilisation and disruption of democratic rule and the undermining of a democratically elected government,” the PYO said.
Such unwarranted and unconstitutional calls by the Opposition will encourage crime and lawlessness in the country and serves to empower criminal elements in our society, said the PYO, which is the youth arm of the governing People’s Progressive Party (PPP) of which Mr Rohee is also General Secretary.
According to the PYO, “it is clear that they fear Minister Rohee” and have made it their campaign to malign his administration of the Ministry of Home Affairs.
It said the Opposition has shown a clear disregard for the Constitution of Guyana, and the norms and rules of parliamentary democracy.
“It is continuously setting dangerous precedents, showing intolerance and the use of force to get their own way,” the PYO stated.

It pointed out that the prerogative of appointing and retaining a Minister of the government is the exclusive prerogative of President Donald Ramotar.
“The Opposition cannot and must not be allowed to use the economy of Guyana as blackmail to seize executive authority. The lawyers in the Opposition need to identify themselves and uphold the law of the land, and reject this unconstitutional grab for power,” the PYO  contended.
The PYO noted that this untenable proposition from the Opposition is hardly surprising, given that in their former guise as the PNC, it is exactly the method that was used by their sponsors that allowed them to seize power in 1964.

“We must not forget that many members of this Opposition were part of the machinery that allowed for 28 years of dictatorial rule, which caused food shortages in Guyana that politicised the judiciary, the army and the police force. They even had a political commissar within the army. The PPP won democracy in 1992 and lest we let our guard down we can easily lose it as in 1964,” the PYO warned.
“As such, the Progressive Youth Organisation categorically rejects the call from the Opposition and stands firmly behind the minister and his policies to ensure a safe and secure environment for all Guyanese,” the PYO declared.
