INTERDICTED postman Lawrence Lewis called ‘G’, 27, of Timmer’s Dam, Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, who was recently placed before the court on the charge of possession of ammunition without being the holder of a licence, has been jailed for the offence.
He was sentenced to two years imprisonment and fined $50,000 by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus when he re-appeared before her on Friday in the New Amsterdam Court.
The convict had, previously, pleaded guilty and was remanded to prison to await sentencing.
Lewis, who, at the time of his arrest had been employed at a New Amsterdam taxi service, was taken into custody after a 7.62×51mm bullet was found on the bedroom ledge of his Angoy’s Avenue home.
Police Sergeant Phillip Sheriff, prosecuting, said a report of assault was made against Lewis by his wife on Saturday, September 14, after he, allegedly, slapped her on the face, following a misunderstanding.
Police ranks visited the couple’s home about 14:15hrs on the same day and, when he was told about the allegation in the yard, he said he needed to change his clothes.
It was on being escorted to the bedroom that the live round was discovered and Lewis claimed he had found the blank six years ago, during a visit to the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Camp Seweyo on Soesdyke/Linden Highway.
The postman was attached to the New Amsterdam Post Office when he was suspended last June, following the discovery of undelivered mails, including several opened and sealed utility bills, Christmas cards and correspondence from the United States Embassy in his residence.
On that occasion, he had also found himself on the wrong side of the law, after a report was made that he had assaulted his wife.
However, when police ranks went to the home, they stumbled upon the undelivered mails in the house. The Guyana Post Office Corporation (GPOC) was informed of the development and began investigations but the result is not known.
