In early Morning Mahaicony blaze – Millions in household items and property vanish

A massive property with all amenities worth over $50M went up in flames early yesterday morning at Mahaicony.

altThe property situated at Lot 7 Cottage Mahaicony, Public Road belonged to Monica Manohar who was not at home at the time of the fire. The woman only became aware of the fire after she awoke yesterday morning while in Berbice.
Speaking with this publication via telephone late yesterday afternoon, Mrs. Manohar explained that she only returned to Guyana last week Monday and was in Berbice where they are having a family gathering. She said that the last time she was at the house was on Thursday before she left for Berbice.
The woman said on Saturday she travelled to the airport to pick up her sister and went straight back to Berbice. Asked about the message she received about the fire, she added that sections of Berbice were without power for some time on Monday and she placed her mobile phone to charge during the night as she went to bed.alt
However, during the course of the morning as the fire raged, persons attempted to inform her of the fire but her phone was off. She related that when she awoke on Tuesday morning and saw the dozens of missed calls she returned the last one which appeared as the first on the phone call log and saw the message that her house was destroyed by fire during the course of the morning.
The distraught woman said that she travelled to the location and spoke with police and fire investigators. She said that she has no idea how the fire started and cannot point fingers at anyone because she is unaware of any enemy she might be having.
According to her, everyone in the area live like brothers and sisters and look out for each other thus making it impossible for her to say who may have wanted to destroy her home by fire.
Today the woman and her sisters were to travel to Mahaicony to spend the remainder of the week before one of them travelled back overseas. Yesterday afternoon she told this reporter that she was speechless and is still at a loss as to how her home was gutted by fire.
She said that she has developed a culture of unplugging all her electrical appliances whenever she leaves the country which she does often. She said that once she is leaving the country for more than a week everything is turned off and plugged out except the security lights around the house.
According to the woman, however, once she is travelling for only a week she would leave her fridge plugged in. Yesterday afternoon when this newspaper visited the property it was observed that the entire home was gutted with cracks in the concrete walls and roofing totally destroyed with zinc sheets caving in and dangling.
The back of the house did not seem to suffer much damage but several air conditioning units were damaged as well as one black water tank. Several other tanks were fairly intact. Yesterday also, persons in the area said that they first noticed the fire sometime around 00.15 hrs yesterday morning.
The fire brigade was summoned but was only able to fight the fire for about 20 minutes with the water in their tanker. When that was finished the firemen quickly mobilised and began taking water from a drainage system aback the burning house to continue battling the blaze. While they were unable to save the house from destruction, the wooden structures next door were not damaged by the fire.
The Guyana Chronicle was informed that the property was up for sale and the owner had already secured a buyer who was scheduled to take responsibility of the property from October.
