Women in love affair fight granted self-bail

TWO women, on separate charges before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, were released on their own individual recognisances yesterday.

Lorraine Black, a retired Guyana Defence Force (GDF) soldier, of Lot 146 Section ‘A’ Sophia, pleaded not guilty to having, on Tuesday, September 10, in Lamaha Gardens, stole $10,000 cash, four shirts and one slipper, all valued $33,000, from Shelly Burgess.
Burgess, a security guard, of Lot 147 Waterloo Street, also in Georgetown, pleaded guilty, with explanation, to the offence, particulars of which said, the same day, she unlawfully assaulted Black, so as to cause her actual bodily harm.
A not guilty plea was entered for Burgess after she explained that she and the other woman had a fight but she did not cause Black any bodily harm.
Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, told the court that Black had gone to the home of Burgess after having been accused of having an affair with her husband and, after they fought, Black picked up Burgess’s handbag and left.
Attorney-at-law, Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat, for Black made a bail application and, after the prosecutor did not object, the women were granted self-bail until September 30.
