Prosecution closes case in Krishndai Narine murder trial

COUNSELS for both the defence and prosecution in the West Coast Demerara murder trial of Ganesh Narine, accused of killing his wife Krishndai on June 12, 2009, will today address Justice James Bovell-Drakes and a mixed jury in the Demerara Assizes.

Narine’s daughter Armanda, an alleged eyewitness to the killing, could not be located to give evidence; but by virtue of Section 95, the prosecution was able to tender her deposition before the judge in evidence. The depositions were read by two persons – a policeman who did a bad job in reading the original document by skipping words he did not understand, and by the judge’s clerk, who read to the jury the typewritten certified copy of the deposition.
The deposition of the daughter Armanda stated that she was at home on the day in question when her father came home drunk and decided to cook. He lighted a fire, collected a knife, and started to chop up onions and seasoning before starting to curse his wife, telling her that he would kill her and burn down the house.
He allegedly then attacked his wife with the knife, stabbing her beneath her left breast and causing her death, the daughter said in the deposition.
Government senior bacteriologist and pathologist, Dr. Nehaul Singh, who had performed the post-mortem examination on the deceased, testified yesterday.
The hearing continues today.  Miss Latchmie Rahamat is defending Ganesh Narine.
