GPL appeals to public to stop throwing garbage near new Sophia sub-station

THE  Guyana Power and Light (GPL) Inc is appealing to the public to desist from dumping and burning garbage along the recently constructed fair weather access road leading to the New Sophia Substation, Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown..

altThis pathway is located east of the PNC’s Congress Place headquarters at Sophia, and is the only access to GPL’s new Sophia sub-station.
The company cautions that burning garbage within close proximity of the power lines located along the roadway can result in serious consequences including damages to the utility poles, lines, fibre optic cables linking GPL systems and the disruption of electricity supply immensely.
The new Sophia substation is one of the seven being constructed under GPL’s Infrastructure Development Programme aimed at improving the quality of electricity being supplied to customers.
As part of the measures taken to deter the public from further engaging in the illegal dumping and burning of garbage within the vicinity of the aforementioned pathway, GPL has erected a barrier preventing unauthorised person(s), animal drawn carts and vehicles from entering the area.
Further, the company is engaging the Georgetown Mayor and City Council to assist in alleviating the problem.
