SANTOS held BK Western Tigers to a 1-1 draw while Fruta Conquerors drubbed Pele 4-1 when play in the Georgetown Football Association’s (GFA) Premier League Qualifiers culminated at the Tucville ground last Sunday night.
In the feature game of the double-header card, Dwayne Lawrence netted a hat-trick for the home side Fruta Conquerors, doing so in the 44th, 62nd and 80th minutes while Eon Austin found the back of Pele’s net in the 87th minute, as they walked away with a 4-1 victory.
Pele’s lone goal was scored by Rawlston Dublin in the 76th minute, 22 minutes after he was brought on as a substitute.
In the first game, Solomon Austin sent Western Tigers into the lead in the 10th minute but 25 minutes later, Leron Charles netted the equaliser for Santos.
Despite the draw with Santos, Western Tigers head the points standing with 13 points from five matches and as a result, they have qualified for the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) 16-team Premier League, with the other GFA qualifiers being Riddim Squad, Santos, Guyana Defence Force (GDF) and Alpha ‘The Hammer’ United.
The latter two were not a part of the just concluded GFA qualifying tournament, as they secured automatic places in the GFF’s Premier League, with Alpha winning GFF’s 2012/2013 Super League while GDF won the GFA President Beer Cup.
Riddim Squad ended the GFA qualifiers with 12 points from five matches, having beaten Fruta Conquerors 4-2 in their last game which was played last Friday night at the same venue.
Amos Ramsay netted a double for the victorious Riddim Squad unit in the 55th and 58th minutes, while Teon Jones and Sheldon Gurrick scored in the 23rd and 87th minutes respectively.
Eon Alleyne and Jermaine Junor scored for Fruta Conquerors in the 48th and 90th minutes respectively.
Santos and Fruta Conquerors ended the qualifiers with six points each, but by virtue of Santos registering a 2-1 win over Fruta Conquerors in their head-to-head clash last week, Santos have qualified for GFF’s Premier League which gets under way on October 6.
Camptown and Pele ended with two points each from five matches and the five Georgetown teams will join 11 other teams from the other GFF affiliates to contest the Premier League.
Upper Demerara will be represented by Milerock, Silver Shattas and Winners Connection, New Amsterdam United and Rosignol United will lead Berbice’s challenge, while Buxton United and BV/Triumph will represent East Coast Demerara and Den Amstel and Young Achievers will do so for West Demerara.
Essequibo, Bartica and East Bank will be involved in a playoff to decide which of them will be the 16th team for the GFF tournament, which has at stake, G$3M for the winner and G$2M, G$1M and G$500,000 for the second-, third- and fourth-placed teams respectively.
According to GFF president Christopher Matthias, lucky patrons at each match will win special prizes, while 40 percent of the gate fees will go directly to the host association to be used for developmental purposes.
