Businessman on false pretence charge granted $600,000 bail

BUSINESSMAN Lloyd Michael, 58, appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday, charged with conspiracy to commit a felony by obtaining money under false pretence.

After the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) was applied, the defendant, of Lot 88 La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, between June 3 and November 30, 2011, in Georgetown, he conspired with person or persons unknown to obtain the sum of $1.7M from Lorraine Fraser under false pretence.
Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, told the court that the defendant conspired with person or persons unknown by pretending to be the power of attorney for Ernell Conrad and that they were in a position to sell a property belonging to Conrad but it was revealed, later, that Michael was not so authorised.
Attorney-at-law, Mr. Paul Fung-a-Fat, for Michael, in his bail application said the latter was having some financial issues with real estate but is willing to repay the sum.
Michael was ordered to post the $600,000 surety until November 1 and report to Corporal Munilall at the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at Eve Leary, every fortnight.
