A CLASSICAL display of power-hitting and astute batsmanship by the Albion Cricket Club duo of Sewnarine Chattergoon and Jonathan Foo led their team to a mammoth 308 all out in 49 overs, earning them a massive 123 runs victory over Young Warriors in the final of the Berbice Bridge Company Inc. (BBCI)-sponsored, Berbice Cricket Board first division competition last Sunday at the Cumberland ground.

Winning the toss and electing to take first strike on the small ground in front a sizeable crowd, Albion were 34 for 2 in the ninth over, when Foo joined opener Chattergoon to form a match-winning partnership.
Foo, the right-handed all-rounder, was at his brutal best, as he hammered the hapless opposition bowlers to all parts of the small ground, as he raced to 145 which included five towering sixes and 14 breathtaking fours.
The left-handed Chattergoon used his experience and played the supporting role as he compiled a workmanlike 102, hitting two sixes and seven sweetly timed fours, as the pair rotated the strike smoothly in a partnership of 217 off 36.1 overs.
Young Warriors tried six bowlers in their efforts to dislodge the pair and it took the guile of left-arm spinner Karamchand Ramnarine to do so, when he had Chattergoon, who was earlier named captain of the Berbice Inter-county team, caught at the wicket in the 42nd over, at 251 for 3.
Bowling for Young Warriors, Ramnarine ended with five for 48 while medium pacers Suresh Dhanai and Linden Austin took two wickets each.
The home team began their chase after the huge target with West Indies U-19 selectee Shimron Hetmyer  giving them a brisk start with four thunderous sixes and  three spanking fours in an entertaining 45.
However, he tried to clear the boundary and perished – a wicket that saw the demise of the home team, who struggled to keep up with the scoring rate and were bowled out for 185 from 37.5 overs.
Ishwar Singh 35 (1×6, 2×4) Dhanai 26 not out (3×6, 1×4), Seon Hetmyer who tried to hold the innings together with 28 (1×4), veteran Anil Beharry batting at number 11 with 16 (2×6) and Mortimer Fraser 11 (1×4) were the only entertainers as the home team folded.
West Indies U-19 selectee, Gudakesh Motie-Kanhai was in mesmerising form with the ball, grabbing 6 for 27 from 10 overs, while Baldeo picked up two and there was one apiece for Foo, his skipper captain Devendra Bishoo and Sharaz Ramcharran.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, BBC representative Amarnauth Singh in brief remarks thanked the BCB for organising the competition.
He said “the Company is very pleased with how the competition was organised and the mileage we got. My superiors will definitely continue their partnership with the Berbice Cricket Board in the future”, while he also congratulated the winning Albion team and thanked all the teams that took part in the competition.
Bishoo also congratulated his teammates and noted that the club is in the habit of winning and lifting the title was their main focus at the commencement of the competition.
Executive member of the BCB, Carl Moore, in his remarks, also congratulated the winning Albion team and thanked the BBCI for joining hands with the BCB in sponsoring the competition, adding that the competition was a success and it allowed the board to showcase the talent of Berbice cricketers despite the poor weather which affected the competition which started in April.
Albion received $80 000 and the winning BBCI trophy while Young Warriors collected $40 000 for their effort and Foo, who was later declared Man-of-the- Match, $10 000, for his outstanding all-round performance.  (Michael Khan)
