Ms. MARGARET Irene Osborne celebrated her 101st birthday last Saturday and is still going strong.
This year the family is happy to celebrate yet another birthday. Granny continues to thrive in health and strength as her family gathered again to celebrate with her.
She was born to John and Rebecca Babb on September 21, 1912 in the village of Hague on the West Coast of Demerara. Born into a family of seven siblings, Ms. Osborne spent her early days on the West Coast Demerara attending St Jude’s Primary School and later attended sewing classes.
On June 3, 1944 she married Herbert Osborne. The union produced
three children; Orlton, Jeanette and Ian Osborne. Mr. and
Mrs. Osborne moved their young family to Linden where she continued to be a home maker while her husband worked in the bauxite industry
Ms. Osborne is known to be a loving and committed woman who
was feisty and strong-willed but calm. A testament to her
commitment to her family was once during a period of unemployment for her husband when she took on domestic work to support her family.
The couple was married for 61 years before Herbert’s death in 2006.
This centenarian is fortunate to enjoy good health for
her age, maintaining her memory, eye sight and hearing. She continues to be the beloved matriarch of her family and is affectionately called Nen Nen. She enjoys reading the newspaper and continues to have a keen interest in the politics of the day. Ms. Osborne also enjoys good conversation and catching up on old times with her family. An ardent Anglican, she also enjoys Pentecostal services.
Ms. Osborne now lives in Georgetown with her daughter. She has seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Her late brother Joyce Rupert Babb was also a centenarian
She is the only surviving sibling.
