Police investigations into Mootoo slayings come up empty

POLICE investigations into the May 10, 2013 murder of Totaram and Bhagmattie Mootoo have experienced no further development, and the case has reached a snag after several persons were questioned and released, because no evidence was garnered to implicate them in the crime.

altThis was revealed by Crime Chief Seelall Persaud yesterday.
Police reported that, at about 00:35 hours on May 10, 2013, the charred remains of businessman Totaram Mootoo, called “Beer”, 54, and his wife Bhagmattie Mootoo, called “Dolly”, 48, were found in the upper-flat bedroom of their Area Q, Turkeyen, ECD home, which had been destroyed by a fire of so far unknown origin.
Post-mortems performed on the bodies of the Mootoos indicated that Totaram died from smoke inhalation compounded by burn trauma, while Bhagmattie succumbed to blunt trauma to the back, compounded by burn trauma.
Initially, three suspects closely associated with the Mootoos were detained for questioning.
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS), responding to a fire call, found the charred remains of the Mootoos, and summoned the police after a search of the premises was conducted.
