MINISTER within the Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development Mr. Norman Whittaker, said the ministry is disturbed that only 65 percent of construction works at the Haags Bosch Landfill Site, aback of Eccles, East Bank Demerara, has been completed for the year so far.

altThe location, replacing the Mandela Avenue dump site in Le Repentir Cemetery, Georgetown, was opened for use sometime in 2011.
Speaking at a press conference in his Fort Street, Kingston office, Whittaker said a huge amount of work remains to be done by December 31.
Furthermore, he said authorities have received reports about bad odours emanating from Haags Bosch.
The ministry has, however, worked out a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with contractors to improve waste compaction there.

Whittaker reported that a revised list of personnel was also compiled and the ministry has come up with a listing of performance indicators.
He said they are working with BK International to ensure that the tasks are finished by the stipulated time.
The Haags Bosch project is being funded by an Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) US$18M loan, intending  to serve 15 surrounding Neighbourhood Democratic Councils (NDCs), for the possible disposal of health care discards and other hazardous materials.
The Mandela landfill, which it replaced, was established in 1994, on a 10-acre plot, to accommodate refuse, primarily from Georgetown, East Coast and East Bank Demerara, as well as some areas on the West Bank and West Coast of Demerara.

It was supposed to have been closed since 2006 after having outlived its usefulness.
