THE police have indicated that charges will be laid against Andrew Barker, 37, a mentally unstable man who is now a patient at New Amsterdam Hospital, following a confrontation last Wednesday with ranks at Goed Bananen Land, East Canje, Berbice.
Barker is reported to be in the habit of venturing into people’s yards and cutting branches from their coconut trees, without permission, to make brooms and sell.
Reports said, on Wednesday, a resident of East Canje objected to Barker’s uninvited presence on a private property and the intruder became annoyed and threatened the man and other villagers with a cutlass.
Policemen from the Reliance Station, in East Canje, were informed about the incident and, when they responded, one was lashed on his head by Barker who, at the time, had been making brooms in the shack where he resides.
The injured cop then summoned back-up but this did not deter Barker from behaving in a menacing manner and, in his attempt to attack those who went in aid of their colleague, he was shot on the left arm to be restrained.
The wounded Barker, who once lived in Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, is known for his delinquent habits and is no stranger to the law.
Police said, in 2010, New Amsterdam businessman Sam Hughes complained about Barker mutilating his coconut trees on Strand Road and, when the latter reported the incidents, to the media, he defecated at the door of the owner’s premises and threatened to throw urine on anyone who objects to him cutting branches off the trees.
