A MAN convicted of stealing a taxi driver’s phone, 50 days ago, was sentenced to two years imprisonment yesterday.
Before Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan, Wesley Felix, of Lot 31 Victoria Street, Plaisance, East Coast of Demerara, pleaded guilty to having, on July 3 at Bourda Market, in Georgetown , stolen a Blackberry cellphone, valued $60,000, from Paul Manu.
The 25-year-old simple larceny convict was with two friends when he stopped the taxi driver to drive him from the village to the city.
Felix told Manu he was going to Bourda Market to carry some gold for his grandmother. However, when they arrived at the destination, the defendant, who was sitting in the front passenger seat, snatched Manu’s phone and escaped, together with his two friends who were sitting in the back seat.
Manu reported the theft at Alberttown Police Station, also in Georgetown and, on September 16, the defendant was spotted by the virtual complainant and arrested but the phone was not recovered.
Felix was asked if he wanted to say anything before being sentenced but he declined.
But after the magistrate pronounced the sentence, the prisoner said: “Yeah respect.”
