Murder accused ‘Cobra’ turns up in chains for trial

JURY at the Demerara Assizes on Wednesday heard that accused Tyrone Rowe called ‘Cobra’ was among a band of armed robbers who shot and killed Troy Collymore called ‘Collie’and ‘Nelly’ on August 7, 2010.

altBut on spotting our photographer, Rowe hid his face with a book as he was being escorted to court before Justice Navindra Singh and a mixed jury, where he is facing trial for the murder of Collymore.
State Counsel, Mrs. Teshana Lake, who is prosecuting, said she hopes to call 13 witnesses and urged the jury to listen carefully to the evidence.
Two witnesses, Detective Corporal Winston Singh of Brickdam Police Station and Constable Neil Thornhill of Plaisance Police Station testified on Wednesday.
Thornhill, an eye witness to the crime, testified that he knew Tyrone Rowe three years prior to the crime in 2010.
Thornhill then identified the accused in the dock.
The witness told the jury about his experience at Victoria Road, Plaisance where there was a shoot-out by armed robbers, when a man by the name of Troy Collymore was shot to death by a fair-skinned member of the armed gang.
The witness also said that he had identified the accused as one of the robbers.
But under cross-examination by defence counsel, Mr. Huckumchand the witness admitted that apart from the fair-skinned man who used his gun to shoot Troy Collymore he could not say with certainty that the other guns were real guns or toy guns.
In answer to further questions under cross-examination, witness said that he was in a state of apprehension that night, resulting in counsel asking him why he had to run and hide under a bridge.
The witness explained that he attended an ID Parade at Brickdam where he picked out Cobra who was among eight half-naked men on parade each carrying numbers.
The witness admitted that at identification parades the suspects are dressed as near as possible as to how they were attired at the time of the incident.
The witness said that when he identified the accused at the shooting, he was attired in a short sleeved shirt, and that the accused was shirtless at the ID Parade, counsel enquired from him whether there was not the possibility that the wrong man was identified? Witness said no and declared: “I have picked out the right man.”
