WITH the aim of strengthening female football in Georgetown, its environs and Guyana at large, the Little Diva Flames Football Club was on Sunday last, commissioned, at the African Cultural Developmental Association (ACDA) building on Thomas Lands.
The election of office-bearers for the newly formed club will be done on Saturday, September 28 at the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) office from 16:00hrs, where the rules and Constitution, which will be used to govern the club, will be ratified along with the identification of the coaches.
Meanwhile, head of the Guyana Sports Development Foundation (GSDF) Colin Baker, whose initiative it was to coordinate the Pepsi/Scotiabank Football Academy from which the idea to form the new club was mooted, was named Patron of the Club.
And in a show of good gesture, the kind-hearted Baker, who is always willing to help in whatever way possible when it comes to the development of sport, whether it is through the GSDF or any other organisation, donated 10 footballs worth approximately $50 000, to the club.
Baker made the donation through his business Sports Plus and was represented by Romana Arthur who said both Baker and Sports Plus are fully behind the development of sports and always support youth development – a further testament to Baker’s character.
Receiving the donation on behalf of Little Diva Flames were Aaliyah Stanley, Shauna Taylor and Cindy McPherson, all students of the New Campbellville Secondary School, who participated in the last Pepsi/Scotiabank Schools Football Academy.
Founder of the club Lawrence ‘Sparrow’ Griffith in his brief remarks said he was grateful to Sports Plus for its generosity and is looking forward to many other sponsors coming on board, even as the club has on its itinerary a trip to Suriname in December, followed by another to Lethem for Easter next year.
Meanwhile, the club intends to commence training on October 12 at a venue to be named, with the Ministry of Education ground being identified as one of the venues and persons wishing to be a part of the club or are willing to contribute towards to the entity’s development can contact Griffith on telephone numbers 621 6986 or 691 3899.
