A SIXTEEN-YEAR-OLD girl, who had been taken from her Better Hope home about a week ago, was recued by police at a Cove and John roadblock, also on East Coast of Demerara on Wednesday.
A suspect is in custody, Police Public Relations Officer, Ivelaw Whittaker told the Guyana Chronicle.
He said, around 19:30 hrs, the victim was discovered in a motor car with the suspected woman and she is in good health.
No further information was available but the probe is continuing.
“From all appearance, we see that there was no sign of abduction but we will continue our investigations,” the Assistant Commissioner said.
The teen, Kareshma Rampersaud disappeared early in the morning on September 12 after she was seen picking flowers for her early morning prayer session. The last thing her mother saw was a vehicle driving away and her daughter gone.
Her father, Vijay Rampersaud said his daughter was taken for a medical check yesterday, to ensure that she was not sexually violated or abused. He said, though, that, when questioned, she said she was not assaulted and was given food once every day.
The man added: “My daughter is traumatised. I am happy that she is home with us and that the woman is in custody,”
On Tuesday, he said the now detained woman had called and demanded a ransom. “She said that my daughter is okay and alive but I will have to give her money and withdraw the reports from the television and the police and then I will get the girl back.”
He said that, around 15:00 hrs on Wednesday, he received a phone call from a man who said his daughter was at the Berbice River Bridge and his mother should come and get her.
The man said the caller insisted that no police should be involved.
However, it had been six days since the girl was missing and her frustrated father said he was fearful for his mother and filed reports at different police stations on the East Coast of Demerara.
He said he was not sure of the reason for taking the teen away but is thankful that he got her back safe.
