Health Minister commends Blood Bank for achieving target of 10,000 units – reveals more blood needed for increased hinterland injuries

HEALTH Minister, Dr. Bheri Ramsaran met last Friday with members of both the outgoing and incoming boards of Directors of the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), and commended the National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS), or the Blood Bank, on achieving its target of 10,000 units of blood.

The minister related that, previously, the Blood Bank would have obtained between 6,000 and 7,000 units; and he credited this achievement to Head of the NBTS, Dr. Nadia Liu, who has a very strong technical background. He expressed hope that by the endalt of the year, another 5,000 units of blood could be achieved.
Dr. Ramsaran explained that most of the blood will be used in the Maternal Department of the GPHC, where a lot of haemorrhaging occurs. He also indicated that more blood is needed because of increased injuries occurring in the hinterland.
This year, a National Chronic Disease Centre will be established at the Blood Bank, and a management committee would be established to further the work of the Blood Bank.
