OVER forty participants, representing the core management team of the University of Guyana (UG) from the Turkeyen and Tain Campuses, were engaged in three days of intense discussions during the
university’s first management retreat from August 30 to September 1 at the Arrow Point Nature Resort.
According to a UG press release, the discussions surrounded 16 thematic areas, ranging from the improvement of the quality of teaching and learning to that of funding for the institution.
Participants also held crucial conversations on the developmental challenges facing the university and a number of solutions to these challenges were discussed and agreed.
A formal document is being prepared to capture the proposals of the management team and to guide the documentation of an action plan for the necessary funding and other material support for the development of the university. |
In his remarks, Vice-Chancellor Professor Jacob Opadeyi underscored the importance of having the support of all stakeholders in the realisation of the aspirations of UG, since funding plays a critical role in the process.
Participants also echoed their resounding support for the renewed direction being undertaken and showed optimism for the implementation of the new action-oriented plan.
The release stated that the retreat also served as a platform to seek mechanisms for building harmonious relationships and collective responsibilities in the management of the university’s business. In that light, the message of building trust through team building acted as the guiding theme for the proceedings of each session.
Opadeyi expressed his appreciation for the overwhelming support and interest displayed by participants and faculties who contributed to the ideas and action plans in the mission to move UG forward.
He also restated his commitment to seeing the university propel its service to the nation at a standard of excellence, which fosters development and growth in all spheres of Guyana and the wider world.
