PPP condemns continued harassment of Clerk of the National Assembly – cites Opposition Leader, other elements

THE People’s Progressive Party has condemned the continued harassment of the Clerk of the National Assembly by leader of the Opposition, Mr. David Granger and other elements of the Opposition.

In a press release yesterday, the PPP said “their latest attack on the Clerk is yet another manifestation of their dictatorial tendency. It is clear by now that they will use all means possible to forge ahead with their agenda of illegalities.”
According to the release, “the party also finds it strange that the AFC through Mr. Khemraj Ramjattan would accuse the Government of not assisting Mr. Isaacs and in the same vein, acknowledge the fact that the Chief Parliamentary Counsel at the Attorney General’s Chambers has been assisting the Clerk.”
The PPP said further that it “has noted the concerns expressed by the Clerk himself, Mr. Sherlock Isaacs who has served in the position since 2002, describing this current Parliament as ‘the worst’ during his tenure following several allegations levelled against him publicly by the Opposition Leader.”
“This revelation by the Clerk,” the PPP highlighted, “is a clear indication that the people’s interests are not being served by the actions of the AFC/APNU alliance in the National Assembly.”
“The ‘confusion’ that is the 10th parliament as described by Mr. Isaacs should come as no surprise with the APNU/AFC riding roughshod over the nation’s business using their combined one-seat majority,” the PPP said.
The PPP release said further that, “You will also recall as earlier indicated, their refusal to support critical legislation to advance the interest of our people, particularly in the area of security; simply because of petty personality issues and their torpedoing of important projects, such as the Amaila falls hydro power. Their assaults on the 2012 and 2013 national budgets are also clear examples of their sabotage and subterfuge.”
The party, in concluding, said it is encouraging the Clerk “to remain strong and continue persevering against the onslaught against his office by the Opposition and to continue discharging his mandate in a professional and responsible manner.”
