CAPTURING two gold from the girls’ Under -13 singles and Under -11 doubles respectively, the Guyana team finished with a total of eight medals when the curtains came down on the badminton competition at the annual
Caribbean International Junior Championships (CAREBACO) last Saturday in San Juan, Puerto Rico.This was confirmed yesterday by team coach, Gokarn Ramdhani, who was also elected General Secretary of the Caribbean Regional Badminton Association when the body held it’s elections at the Annual General Meeting that was held, following the presentation of prizes to the respective winners in the Championships.
Jamaica’s Audley Astwood was selected to head the seven member executive which also saw Dominican Republic’s Generoso Castillo elected as vice-president, Dionne Haynes from Barbados serving as Treasurer, while Zeudi Mack from Trinidad, Raydon Coulor from Suriname and Gloria Chung from Barbados were elected to the committee member positions.
At the presentation ceremony, in addition to the two gold medals, Guyana also received two silver and four bronze medals, with the gold medals being won by Priyanna Ramdhani and Abosaide Cadogan, while Priyanna was also responsible for both silver medals.
It was Priyanna who had won the gold in the girls’ Under- 13 singles, and Cadogan in the girls’ Under- 11 doubles, winning alongside Suriname’s Erisa Bleau. Priyanna also won silver in the Girls’ Under 15 doubles and in the Under 13 mixed doubles where she teamed up with Amanda Haywood and Trinidad’s Leon Cassie, respectively.
The bronzes were won by Narayan Ramdhani and Jonathan Mangra in the boys’ Under 17 doubles and Nadine Jairam and Meshonn Persaud in the girls’ Under 17 doubles respectively.
Apart from the eight medals, Guyana who had nine players competing in the competition where they experienced mixed fortunes, ended with a fourth place position in the team competition which had preceded the singles competition of the Championships, with the Guyanese expected to travel back today.
