THE Ministry of Education will today be hosting a special motivational workshop for teachers on “transforming minds”, which will be facilitated by author and international motivational speaker Ron Clark at the National Cultural Centre (NCC).
This workshop will also be done in Tain, Berbice tomorrow and is being held as a part of the ministry’s calendar of activities for Education Month 2013 under the theme “Transforming classrooms for the 21st century”.
The workshop today is expected to attract approximately 2,000 teachers while the second workshop tomorrow will see approximately 500 in attendance.
According to the Premiere Speakers Bureau website, Ron Clark is known to many as “America’s Educator,” and is the 2000 Disney American Teacher of the Year, a two-time New York Times Bestselling author, the subject of a television movie and the founder of The Ron Clark Academy.
He has been regularly featured on network and cable television such as “The Today Show”, Cable News Network (CNN) and the Oprah Winfrey show, and was dubbed by Winfrey as her first “Phenomenal Man.”
Visual Arts Exhibition
Meanwhile, the ministry will also be hosting a Visual Arts Exhibition for secondary schools at Castellani House from today.
This exhibition will run until September 20th, and will see the display of artwork which was submitted by students for the visual arts section of the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) Examination.
On September 18th, there will be a Literacy Showcase, and on the 26th there will be a Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Career Fair at the Ministry of Education ground where they will be showcasing how a 21st century classroom should look.
There will be a Day of Sports on September 28th, where all ministry officials will be participating and on September 30th, there will be a public presentation by School Steel Bands in the Botanical Gardens.
Also on the calendar of activities are a wide range of panel discussions including Transforming Classrooms and Literacy which will be broadcast on television and other sections of the media, and these discussions will be held between ministry officials and members of various communities as well.
Other activities include a Home Economics Extravaganza, National Spelling Bee Competition sponsored by GT&T, a Drama Festival and the launch of J.O.F. Haynes Debating Competition.
Education Month activities will conclude with the observance of World Teachers’ Day on Saturday October 5th, 2013 when a message will be delivered by Chief Education Officer, Mr. Olato Sam.
