Slain Eccles mechanic laid to rest after moving service

THE late Kirk Davis — biker, mechanic and taxi driver who was senselessly gunned down in front of his home at Eccles, East Bank Demerara on September 3 — was yesterday laid to rest in the graveyard of the Christian Brethren Church at Peter’s Hall, EBD, following a moving Thanksgiving Service for his life, held at the same church.

Amidst a deluge of moving tributes, Kirk, baptized at the age of four and brought up in the same church with other family members, was remembered as a wonderful person; a friend to all; a source of inspiration, and one whose life had been exemplary in many ways.

Kirk was brought up into a respectable Christian family which had stamped an indelible mark on its home community, and accordingly, he had always been well respected, respectable, and well loved not only amongst the family, but within the community; the Bikers Association in which he had featured prominently, and all those with whom he had interacted during his lifetime.

Mrs. Lorna Davis, his devastated grandmother, recalled in an invited comment yesterday what a wonderful grandson he had been, not only to her, but to the entire family. He was well liked, and everyone reported well about him.

His cousins Nikisha and Anita remarked, “He was such a loving person…kind and jovial. He had a way of lifting your spirits even when you were down, and he was always willing to lend a hand.”

Pathetically, his cousin Nikisha recalled that on the night Kirk was shot, they distinctly heard the sounds of the gunshots being fired while they were at their grandparents’ home in Bagotstown. They were all alarmed, and wondered where it could be coming from, and what had triggered it. Not for one minute could they imagine it was their loved one, Kurt, coming under fire.

But when Kurt’s elder brother, Shawn, received a message informing that Kirk had been shot, the tragic news plunged the family into mourning, and within minutes everyone was hastening to the GPHC, only to behold his bullet-riddled body.

A post-mortem examination later determined that he had sustained 16 gunshot wounds to his body, mainly his chest.

Deep anguish has pervaded his home and community, even as many whose lives he had touched continue to call for justice to be served in relation to his execution.

However, at the thanksgiving service for Kirk’s life yesterday, Elder Philip Barry called for prayers for the hurting and bereaved family, and admonished the mourners and sympathizers to be trusting and strong in the Lord. “God is in charge; and with God, justice will be served,” he reminded them.

Kirk Davis has left to mourn his parents, Trevor and Sonia aka Pinky; his only son, Kai; several brothers and one sister; grandparents Roy and Lorna Davis, and several other relatives and friends.
