Shot defendant remanded on three armed robbery charges

DWAYNE Chance, 29, of Lot 49 Russell Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, was remanded to prison yesterday, on three charges of robbery under arms.

He appeared before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry and, after the Administration of Justice Act (AJA) was applied, the defendant pleaded not guilty to having:
* on September 4, at Regent and Wellington Streets, Georgetown, being in company of another, armed with a gun, robbed Christopher Mahadeo of one Blackberry cellular phone and $4,500 cash, making a total loss of $72,500;
* on the same day and place, armed and in company of another man, robbed Kareem Maxwell of two blackberry cellular phones, one apple IPad and $3,500, totalling $233,500 and
* also in company of another and armed with a gun, stole, from Isaacs Electronics Store, seven Blackberry cellular phones, two laptop computers, two Samsung Galaxy tablets, one apple IPad, five digital cameras, 110 Blackberry batteries and 15 cellular phone cases, all with a total value $1,835,500, property of Anthony Sarjoo.
Police Corporal Bharat Mangru, prosecuting, told the court that the same day, around 16:35 hrs, the defendant was shot by Sarjoo when he attempted to pull something from his waist.
The prosecutor successfully objected to bail for Chance, citing the seriousness and nature of the crimes and the penalties attached.
He informed the court that investigations are continuing and the police are still hunting for Chance’s accomplice.
The cases were put off to September 20.
