CRIME Chief Seelall Persaud said, yesterday, that the fatal shooting, by Police, of Krishna Persaud, 45, at Bel Air Village, Georgetown, last Sunday, is still being investigated by the Office of Professional Responsibility (OPR).
The Deputy Commissioner (Law Enforcement) said, on completion of the probe, it is likely a recommendation will be made by OPR to Acting Commissioner Leroy Brumell, after which the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Shalimar Ali-Hack will recommend the course of action.
Police reported that, at about 20:00 hrs on September 8, ranks responded to a report of threats, involving the use of a knife, made on another man by Krishna Persaud.
The report said, during efforts to arrest Krishna Persaud, he attacked the policemen with a cutlass, resulting in injuries to the left hand of Corporal 18908 Ramdat and the right index finger of Constable 20537 Adams.
It added that, as a result, the police had to resort to the use of force and Krishna Persaud was shot dead.
The mason, who was intoxicated at the time of the incident, resisted arrest and ran into his modest house but was confronted by the ranks, who claimed he chopped them and they had no choice but to discharge a round which hit him to the back of his head.
At his house, a trail of blood was observed from the kitchen area to the front door, which suggests that he was, probably, dragged out of the building by the ranks, the report said.
Persaud, reportedly, died almost instantly but was conveyed to the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH), where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
