Opadeyi denies examination papers sold at UG

UNIVERSITY of Guyana Vice-Chancellor, Jacob Opadeyi  says that investigations have revealed that the sale of examination papers does not take place at the institution.

Speaking at a press conference in the Education Lecture Theatre of the Turkeyen Campus on Tuesday, he refuted the claim while responding to a question from a member of the media about reports and complaints by persons.
According to Professor Opadeyi, an anonymous writer wrote the Hugh Wooding Law School in Trinidad and Tobago, making allegations that examination questions are being sold at UG and the matter was brought to his attention by the law school, which was very concerned about it.
He explained that upon receiving the letter, he spent about two weeks investigating the matter and it was determined that the allegation is untrue.
Dr. Opadeyi pointed out that if test papers were being sold, then it would be expected that students would gain outstanding marks but this was not the case since he personally examined all of the marks and the pass rate was less than 50 percent for all of the courses.
He declared that it is unjust to give a bad name to eminent persons who are teaching the law programme, who have been professors in other universities and who are doing a good service while collecting poor salaries.
Dr. Opadeyi said that Hugh Wooding only admits 25 Guyanese students to do law there but that he would try to see that number increased  to 35.
He said he was told that accusations about the sale of the papers happens every year and that students who are not going to be among those 25 admitted to the law school want to discredit those who are.
This, he asserted, is not fair to the university, while noting that persons are accepted into Hugh Wooding, based on their academic performance and not by who they are and records have shown that UG graduates have been doing very well and topping their class at the law school.
Dr. Opadeyi challenged anyone who has any evidence of the sales of exam papers to take it to him and include their name and the matter will be investigated since this act should not occur.
