FOLLOWING several postponements due to heavy and persistent rain which left the Everest Cricket Club ground in a soggy and at times waterlogged state, the organisers of the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Incorporated’s (GSCL) second 12/12 championships will bowl off tomorrow at 10:00hrs.

At stake in the tournament, the second of its kind following the formation of the GSCL Inc. since May, is a first place prize of $600 000 and a trophy, with the second-placed team collecting $200 000 and a trophy.
Apart from the abovementioned prizes, the man-of-the-series will receive one three-piece living room suite, the best batsman and bowler will each walk away with $5 000 and a trophy and the man-of-the-match in the final, $10 000 and a trophy.
Twelve teams, including defending champions Memorex, were placed into four groups of three and will contest the preliminary rounds of the tournament on a round-robin basis, with the top two teams advancing to the quarterfinal which is set for next Saturday, with the semifinal and final being contested the following day.
Director of Sport within the National Sports Commission (NSC) Neil Kumar is expected to deliver the opening remarks, before the action bowls off with two group matches being played simultaneously.
Memorex, who were drawn in Group D alongside R1 and Universal DVD Titans, will sit out the first round as the latter teams do battle, before Memorex play the loser of that encounter and later in the day, the winner.
Trophy Stall, Regal XI and East Coast All Star are in Group A, with Regal XI being given the first round bye; Speed Boat, Better Hope and Recharge are the teams competing out of Group B, with Recharge earning the bye and Invaders, Wolf Warriors and Romaine XI battling it out of Group C, with Romaine XI drawing the first round bye.
At the quarterfinal stage, the winner of Group C will oppose the runner-up of Group D, with Group D’s winner facing the Group C’s runner-up in one match and vice versa between Groups A and B, following which the top four teams will advance to the semifinals.
At the semi-final stage, the winner of the first quarterfinal will oppose the winner of the fourth quarterfinal in one match while the other semifinal will pit the winner of the second quarterfinal against winner of the third.
The competition is expected to be keen and filled with rivalry, especially after four postponements which allowed the participating teams to heighten and increase their preparations for tomorrow.
