BK Western Tigers needled Camptown 1-0 at the Tucville ground on Wednesday evening, to lead the points standing in the Georgetown Zone of the Guyana Football Federation’s (GFF) Premier League tournament.
The West Ruimveldt-based team who won their first game on the opening night of the competition when they defeated Fruta Conquerors 2-0 will now have their focus on Pele in tonight’s feature game of another scheduled double-header card.
The lone goal in Wednesday’s match was scored by Stellon Davis in the 72nd minute after a first half stalemate.
The feature match which should have been played between Pele and homesters Fruta Conquerors was not played, as Pele failed once again to make an appearance in the tournament which is being staged by the Georgetown Football Association (GFA) to come up with the six teams that will represent the GFA in the GFF’s 16-team Premier League which gets under way on October 6.
With two back-to-back victories to their name, Western Tigers lead the points standing with six points.
From the first whistle on Wednesday night, Western Tigers took the attack to their opponents, but Camptown’s stout defence thwarted their intentions.
Both teams showed strength at midfield but Western Tigers got the upper hand on most occasions. Their problem, however, was their finishing, even though they put together some neat passes.
Western Tigers continued to pressure the opposition’s defence but failed miserably to penetrate it on a number of occasions.
Western Tigers’ front line were guilty all night of not turning and facing the opposition in their attacking mode and continued to keep shooting wide of the mark.
With no goals resulting in the first half, both teams came out for the second session, looking to open their respective accounts and it was Camptown who were the more aggressive.
They took the attack to their West Ruimveldt counterparts but just could not find their target even though they had sure goal-scoring opportunities.
There were a few occasions when Western Tigers had the upper hand over their opponents, but they seemed to be rushing the ball too much, causing them to lose control of the game.
However, during the 72nd minute of play, the ball was crossed from the right side to the left and Davis ran on to it and fired a first-time shot from approximately 30 yards out and rocked the Camptown net to go one up.
Camptown came close to scoring when they were awarded a corner. The ball was lobbed across the Western Tigers’ goal but a defender got his foot to it sending it to the right side where a first-time shot by a Camptown striker sent the ball crashing onto the crossbar and back into play.
Meanwhile, Riddim Squad will engage Santos in tonight’s opening game from 18:00hrs.
