UG to address poor levels of staff salaries, compensation – also embarking on management audit

Vice Chancellor of the University of Guyana, Professor Jacob Opadeyi says the university administration is working to address the poor levels of staff salaries and compensation, in addition to doing a management audit.

He made this disclosure yesterday while addressing members of the media at a press conference in UG’s Education Lecture Theatre on the Turkeyen Campus.
“We cannot run a quality university using salaries that are not conducive to decent living,” Opadeyi declared.
Fees for Extra Lessons
He informed that recently they terminated an appointment because a lecturer was charging fees to give students extra lessons.
“A university cannot be run like that and we cannot create an environment where our staff members will be looking for means of increasing their income. The salary has to be increased and the compensation system also has to be increased,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, Opadeyi disclosed that the university will be embarking on a management audit to find out whether or not they are properly following their admission and human resources regulations.
He further explained that they will be doing this to ensure that they are doing what they’re supposed to be doing or whether all their regulations are being ignored and they are just doing what they want to do.
Sexual Harassment
Opadeyi said that they will be reviewing their sexual harassment policy and regulations, noting that on Monday a staff member was sent home because of sexual harassment issues.
He stressed that as the vice chancellor he will not tolerate any form of sexual harassment at the university.
According to him, they have also been experiencing an issue of late submission of marks and they cannot understand why a lecturer cannot mark test papers within the required time.
Opadeyi informed that to date they are yet to receive all the marks from lecturers for the second semester.
He said also that they are working on a quality assurance system and in this coming year all the programmes will have a second examiner and all year three and four courses will have an external examiner so that marks in these periods will be moderated by a second examiner and an external examiner outside of the university.
