A MASON has been charged with assaulting a policeman after he was arrested in connection with a robbery.
One charge against Michael Cowens, 25, of Lot 51 Pere Street, Kitty, Georgetown, said he robbed Amjad Rohamand of one Canadian passport, a Samsung Galaxy cellphone, a watch and $30,000, all amounting to a loss of $180,000.
After the Administration of Justice Act was applied, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the robbery offence before Magistrate Judy Latchman.
Police Sergeant Vishnu Hunt, prosecuting, successfully objected to bail for Rohamand, citing the seriousness of the crime, the penalty it attracts and also the quantum involved.
The prosecutor said the defendant resides in the same area as the virtual complainant and it was highly logical that he would obstruct the course of justice and harm the victim.
Rohamand confirmed that he is resident six doors away from Cowens and, on the day of the incident, some 20 of the defendant’s friends gathered in his yard and threatened to kill him and it took ten policemen to remove them.
The man said he is really scared and cannot even fly out of the country because the defendant has got his passport.
Rohamand complained that his mother is due for a surgery and he needs his travel document to go and see her but the mob even threatened him in the police station.
Cowens, who, is also charged with disorderly behaviour, admitted to the conduct on July 3 at Kitty Police Station.
He said he had been arrested on that day and put in the lock-ups but, when he requested to visit the washroom, the policewoman on duty told him he could not do so and she went to sleep.
He said he ended up urinating on himself.
The magistrate entered a not guilty plea for him and postponed the case to September 17.
